Attend a Farmer’s Market | The Arcata Farmer's Market is open every Saturday, rain or shine! Attend a winter market day to get excited for the return of the weekly community event that is at the heart of Arcata life. |
Build a sand sculpture | You will need water, sand, buckets and/or containers, carving tools, and your imagination. Check out last year's winners of the annual Friends of the Dunes Sand sculpture festival for inspiration. |
Take a picture of favorite outdoor study spot | Find a grassy knoll, rooftop nest, scenic bench or stairwell, or under a tree. Discover your favorite area to study in. |
Walk the Trail #8 Loop in the Community Forest / walk a local nature walk/ trail | The Arcata Community forest has a lot of wonderful trails to explore, but if you aren't familiar with the trail numbers, check out this useful map. If you are not living locally, we recommend using the All Trails app/ website for great information about trails near you. |
Picture & identify your favorite local wildlife critter | iNaturalist is a great resource to help you identify all the different flora and fauna found in your area! Make sure to keep a respectful distance from all wildlife -- if your presence changes their behavior, you are too close. |
Identify an edible plant | We have all sorts of edible wild plants growing in Northern California such as blackberries & huckleberries. There has even been an effort to plant & identify with signs edible landscaping on campus. Here is a great resource for identifying edible plants of North America. |
Find a sea stack or rock formation | A sea stack is a geological rock formation along the coastline. There are approximately 20,000 rock formations off the coast of California. |
Find a banana slugs or another local decomposer | Learn more about Banana Slugs from National Geographic. Or for those of you who may not have banana slugs in your area, here's a great article that shows you tips and tricks for identifying mushrooms, even in the most urban of places! |
Take a picture from a scenic overlook | If you're in Humboldt County, be sure to check out the Luffenholtz overlook for some scenic, north coast views! |
Walk/bicycle/skate the Hammond Trail or a local trail | Voted the "best place to walk, jog, or bike" in Humboldt, the Hammond Trail has something for everyone! |
Strike a pose on the Arcata Plaza / your city hall or town square | The Arcata Plaza has held a special place in the lives of many Humboldt students over the span of the past century. The plaza is not only where many of our most exciting events occur, but it is a wonderful place for a picnic, slack line practice, or a walk around to our local shops. If you are out of the area we would love to see what your city hall/ town center looks like! |
Share your favorite spot to watch the sunset or sunrise | Go catch those rays at your favorite spot to catch them! Here is where you can find local sunrise & sunset times. If you haven't had the chance, we recommend trying the view from the grass in front of Founders Hall or the Ma'lel Dunes. |
Take your creativity outside | Paint in the garden, make a mural in the sand at the beach...Not sure where to start? Try going to a local thrift shop to pick up supplies, or make temporary art out of the nature around you. Challenge your creative side! |

Find wildlife animal tracks | Here's a great article covering wildlife tracking basics, like tracks, trails, and nests! You can also look up on YouTube how other people find tracks in your area. |
Say hi to some local farm animals | The best place to find cute local farm animals is in the Arcata Bottoms. |
Play at one of Arcata’s many playgrounds/ Play at a local playground | Need some help finding a playground? Use Google Maps to look up one close to you! Arcata has some really fun & innovative parks that are worth the visit. We recommend checking out Greenview Park off 11th Street if you have never been. |
Take a picture with blooming spring flowers | You can use iNaturalist to find your local blooming flowers. If you're in Humboldt County, try checking out the Humboldt Botanical Garden! |
Build a fort! | Take those cushions off the couch: now they're your ceiling! Try finding tools and structures in your house to build a fun fort! Pop some popcorn, find your favorite movie, and snuggle up in your new home. |
Practice one of these climbing knots | If you aren't sure what knot to start learning, try the classic figure-8 knot! This knot is used in many different activities, including climbing and sailing! Locate Humboldt’s College Seal on campus | No hints on this one! It is going to take getting out and exploring campus to find one of the many campus seals. |
Blind draw with a friend | Sit back-to-back with a roommate or try a virtual game with your friends to put your creative skills to the test! One person chooses an item and describes it without revealing what it is and without looking at what the “artist” is drawing. The artist draws what is being described to the best of their ability. Then you can share a laugh over how much the pictures do or do not look like what the item actually was. |
Make your favorite smore and share a pic | A classic smore is melted chocolate and marshmallow on a graham cracker! Feel free to be creative and make your own version, like adding peanut butter, Oreo's, or whatever your sweet tooth is craving! |
